AIM
The aim of this wiki is to explain steps to activate write --protect mode for PCD. This is valid for SAP release 640 and 700. This can be useful when migrating data from an old portal system to a new one in order to prevent data from being written to the old system or during backups and update of the portal system in order to avoid data loss or inconsistency.

The following are Affected by write-protect mode :-
Portal
Most of the editors are either not available at all or have limited functionality in the portal .
Collaboration
Administrator cannot create new rooms or edit or delete existing rooms.

STEPS
Procedure:-
- Start the Visual Administrator.
- Choose ‘Global Configuration’ >> ‘Server’ >> ‘Services’ >> ‘com.sap.portal.pcd.gl’ >> Select ‘Properties’ tab >> then Change the key ‘Pcd.Pl.WriteProtectActivated’ from false to true
- Then click on ‘Update’.
- Click on the icon for saving. A dialog box appears. To apply the changes to all cluster elements, click on yes. A second dialog box appears. To start the service again, click again on yes.
The following are Affected by write-protect mode :-
Portal
Most of the editors are either not available at all or have limited functionality in the portal .
- Administrator can not import, export and transport the packages using Transport editor.
- Administrator can not create, edit, and delete objects using Object editor.
- Personalization of the portal themes will not be available.
Collaboration
Administrator cannot create new rooms or edit or delete existing rooms.
UME
- Portal roles cannot be created.
- Administrator cannot assign portal roles to actions, neither in the user management administration console nor in the Role Editor.
